Student: Opportunities Doubled in Shorter Amount of Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Zachary York always knew he wanted to pursue a career in healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I grew up in a family full of nurses and have always admired how my mom and sister impact lives through their care,\u201d York said. \u201cPharmacy lets me do the same in my own way, by ensuring patients receive the safest and most effective treatments all while also allowing me to make an impact through the development of new therapies in the pharmaceutical industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_95553\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95553\" class=\"wp-image-95553\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Zachary-York-MAIN-IMG_1647.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Pharm.D. student Zachary York in cap and gown posing net to the TOL-EDO sign.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Zachary-York-MAIN-IMG_1647.jpg 748w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Zachary-York-MAIN-IMG_1647-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-95553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Now in his fourth year of the six-year Doctorate of Pharmacy Program, Zachary York has discovered a passion for oncology and is involved with multiple acclaimed pharmaceutical programs.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>York took advantage of UToledo\u2019s six-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utoledo.edu\/programs\/pharmd\/\">Doctorate of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) Program<\/a>, which allows students to graduate two years early.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUToledo meant double the opportunities in a shorter amount of time,&#8221; he said. \u201cWhen I found UToledo, I knew I had found the right option for me. It stood out as a place where I could build a strong foundation while preparing to make an impact in the broader healthcare and pharmaceutical industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently in his fourth year of the program, York is involved with multiple acclaimed pharmaceutical programs including the Network for Collaborative Oncology Development &amp; Advancement (NCODA) and the Industry Pharmacists Organization, where he has served in national roles and studied industry pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>He currently interns at Corewell Health in Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough both my clinical experiences and involvement, I was able to discover my passion for oncology,\u201d York said. \u201cI\u2019ve had the opportunity to work closely with complex cancer therapies and see their real-world impact on patients. That experience really sparked my excitement for the innovative side of healthcare. It made me realize that I want to be part of the process of bringing these therapies to patients, which is why I\u2019m pursuing a career in medical affairs within the pharmaceutical industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Michelle Seegert, associate dean for admissions and enrollment management and a clinical associate professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utoledo.edu\/pharmacy\/\">College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences<\/a>, said York is a phenomenal student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZach is a great student leader who has made the most of his college experience by getting involved and finding his passion,\u201d Seegert said. \u201cHe is well-suited to enter the career he is looking to pursue, which is our goal for all students in our programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>York said he plans to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship in medical affairs with a focus on oncology \u00a0to help develop new therapies that will shape the future of cancer care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe advice I would give for future students is to take advantage of every opportunity to network and build relationships,\u201d he said. \u201cConferences, student organizations and the many resources UToledo offers can make a huge difference in your journey.
