The University of Toledo\u2019s Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership will explore the legacy of abolitionist Frederick Douglass in a free, public lecture on Tuesday, Feb. 10.<\/p>\n

Dr. Diana Schaub, a professor emerita of political science at Loyola University Maryland, will present the Douglass Day Lecture titled \u201cFrederick Douglass: The Heart and Mind of a Patriot\u201d at noon in the Law Center Room 1013.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrederick Douglass remains an exemplary model of American citizenship because of the way he was able to combine a clear-sighted understanding of both the flaws and the strengths of American society with a commitment to reform rooted in the enduring principles of constitutional self-government,\u201d said Dr. Jonathan Culp, director of the Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership. \u201cWe\u2019re pleased to welcome Dr. Diana Schaub to reflect on his life and works in honor of Frederick Douglass Day, which is celebrated annually on Feb. 14.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schaub specializes in American political thought and history with a particular interest in Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, among other topics.<\/p>\n

The Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership is a multidisciplinary center at UToledo that was created and funded by the Ohio Legislature in 2023. Through teaching, research and public programming, the institute provides a space for diverse voices to discuss and debate key questions about U.S. society, history and politics.<\/p>\n
