Senior Macy Medors used the power of movement to help UToledo capture a historic MAC title in women’s volleyball. Now, she is learning how to use that same power to heal patients.<\/p><\/div>\n
\u201cPhysical activity has always played an important role in my own health and well-being,\u201d Medors said. \u201cRecreational therapy uses activity in the same way \u2014 to support healing, coping and growth.\u201d<\/p>\n
A native of Columbus, Medors arrived at UToledo looking for a balance that is often hard to find: the chance to compete at the Division I level while pursuing a rigorous, healthcare-focused education.<\/p>\n
\u201cI chose The University of Toledo because it gave me the chance to live out my dream of playing Division I volleyball while preparing for a meaningful career in healthcare,\u201d she said. \u201cFrom the moment I stepped on campus, the people and the environment felt right.\u201d<\/p>\n
Medors offered special recognition to Dr. Holly Eichner, a senior lecturer and director of the UToledo Recreation Therapy Program, who, she said, has been instrumental in supporting her academic journey.<\/p>\n
\u201cDr. Eichner has always been understanding and supportive during stressful moments and scheduling challenges,\u201d she said. \u201cThat level of care has made a lasting impact on my experience at UToledo.\u201d<\/p>\n
While initially exploring various medical fields, Medors found her calling in recreational therapy\u2019s holistic approach. The discipline uses recreation \u2014 from sports and arts to community outings \u2014 to improve the physical, emotional and social well-being of patients.<\/p>\n
For a student-athlete familiar with the discipline required to win a championship, the major was a natural fit.<\/p>\n
Medors is completing her senior fieldwork rotations, the final step before her career as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
