But after relocating to Wyoming, he made the life-defining decision to seek treatment for alcohol addiction.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58894\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58894\" class=\"size-full wp-image-58894\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Graduation-Cap_blue-500x500-e1586882554282.png\" alt=\"Graduation Cap\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-58894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>CELEBRATING SUCCESS:<\/strong> UToledo recognizes the Class of 2026 with a series of stories featuring students receiving their degrees at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utoledo.edu\/commencement\/\">spring commencement<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sobriety gave him what he describes as a \u201creset button,\u201d providing the clarity to pursue a long-held goal: law school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight years ago, if someone had told me I would be where I am today, I never would have believed them,\u201d Whitaker said.<\/p>\n<p>Whitaker earned admission to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utoledo.edu\/law\/\">The University of Toledo College of Law<\/a>, where he immersed himself in the academic experience. He served as an academic success tutor for first-year students, a teaching assistant and the founder of a revived Federal Bar Association student chapter.<\/p>\n<p>His commitment paid off.<\/p>\n<p>This spring, Whitaker will graduate second in his law class while concurrently earning a master\u2019s degree in criminal justice.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the classroom, Whitaker sought out hands-on experience across the legal system, completing internships in federal defense, the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office in the Northern District of Ohio and a state prosecutor\u2019s office in Monroe County.<\/p>\n<p>Following graduation, Whitaker will begin a highly competitive two-year federal judicial clerkship with Judge James R.
