He also will present a free master class Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Haerle served on the faculty of the Jazz Studies Division of the College of Music at the University of North Texas for 34 years. He has recorded many Jamey Aebersold play-alongs, has had several jazz textbooks published, and is an active jazz clinician nationally and internationally.

He has performed with Dave Liebman and Pat Metheny, and he toured the United States and Europe with the Clark Terry Quintet in 1975.

In 2003, the pianist was inducted into the International Association for Jazz Education Hall of Fame.

The UT Department of Music Jazz Studies Program annually honors Toledo jazz legend Tatum and his contributions to the music world by presenting a scholarship concert in his name featuring a notable jazz pianist.

The concert supports the Art Tatum Memorial Jazz Scholarship Fund, which benefits musically gifted undergraduate music majors of color, preferably a jazz pianist. The scholarship was established in 1994 and endowed in 2002 by various donors, including the Art Tatum Jazz Heritage Society.

Tickets — $10 for the public and $5 for students and seniors — will be sold at the door.
