Music instructor Dr. Junqi “Sophie” Tang joined a distinguished panel of judges for the 11th Hong Kong International Violin Competition and the Eighth Hong Kong International Chamber Music Competition.

Sponsored by the Asia Musicians Association, the competitions, conducted virtually, attracted thousands of applicants from more than a dozen countries, beginning with the first round on Dec. 5.

Approximately 155 students – 14 high-level violinists in the professional division and about 140 in the aficionado division – made it to the second and final round, which began Feb. 10 and ended on Thursday, Feb. 25.

“Through my participation in the competitions, I am representing the United States, and UToledo in particular, and am thrilled to be serving on the jury and helping to discover the next generation of talented artists from all over the world who perform at the highest level,” Tang said. “It is my goal to build on the wonderful culture and tradition in the city of Toledo, and to inspire and enrich the lives of young people through knowledge and experience.”

The Artistic director of the HanTong International Music Festival and music director of the Cincinnati Music and Arts Society, Tang has performed with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, the Cincinnati Symphony and the Toledo Symphony. She has been a First Prize winner in the 2019 Hong Kong International Music Festival Competition, an excellent performance award of 2016 Schoenfeld International String Competition.
