Rockets’ season ends with 69-51 loss to Robert Morris

Toledo’s season, which saw the Rockets register a 15-win improvement from a year ago, came to an close Saturday afternoon in Savage Arena with a 69-51 defeat to Robert Morris (26-10) in the second round of the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

Rian Pearson led the Rockets with 14 points.

Sophomore guard Rian Pearson topped the Rockets offensively with 14 points and was the only UT player to score in double figures. Junior guard Curtis Dennis tallied nine points, while sophomore forward Reese Holliday and freshman guard Julius Brown scored seven points each.

Sophomore guard Coron Williams paced the Colonials with a game-high 17 points and was joined in double figures by junior guard Lucky Jones (13 points, team-high six rebounds), junior guard Velton Jones (10 points) and junior forward Russell Johnson (10 points).

Robert Morris held a sizable 35-26 advantage on the glass and also held UT to its second-lowest shooting mark (35.3 field-goal percentage) of the season. The Colonials shot 50.0 percent from the field, including a sizzling 47.6 percent (10 of 21) from behind the three-point arc.

UT (19-17) couldn’t get any shots to fall from the tip as the Colonials’ stifling defense limited the Rockets to a 20.7 first-half field-goal percentage.

Toledo missed its first 16 shots of the game as the Colonials surged to an 18-3 advantage. Sophomore center Richard Wonnell ended UT’s draught at the 8:18 mark of the first by grabbing an offensive board and laying it back in.

The Rockets were able to cut their deficit to single digits, 34-26, by scoring six straight points three minutes into the second half. However, the Colonials responded with a 6-0 burst of to restore a 14-point cushion.

The closest UT came the rest of the contest was within 12 points.
