Harpham is the author of The Humanities and the Dream of America. He is a visiting research professor of English at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Harpham is a life member of Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge and a member of the board of visitors of Ralston College.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and a doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles.

The National Humanities Center is the only major independent U.S. institute for advanced study in all fields of the humanities and seeks to ensure the continuing strength of the liberal arts and to affirm the importance of the humanities in American life.
