Dr. Geoffrey Galt Harpham, president and director of the National Humanities Center, is a strong voice in the national conversation about the value of the humanities and their place in American culture.

The free, public lecture will be presented by the Humanities Institute of the College of Languages, Literature and Social Sciences, and will take place Thursday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in the Driscoll Alumni Center Auditorium. A reception will follow.
Harpham is the author of The Humanities and the Dream of America. According to one review, the book is “… a rich and significant collection of essays on the state of the humanities, the nature of teaching and research, the history and social function of the university, and the place of books in our contemporary experience.”
He is a visiting research professor of English at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Harpham is a life member of Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge and a member of the board of visitors of Ralston College.
He received a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and a doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles.
