Junior outfielder Ben Hammer has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV University Division First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.

Hammer has a 3.81 cumulative grade-point average as an exercise science major.

On the diamond, Hammer leads the Mid-American Conference in on-base percentage (.465) and ranks second in batting average (.372). The Rockets’ centerfielder has hit safely in 31 of 42 contests, including a team-high 19 multi-hit efforts. In MAC play, the Wayne, Ohio, native is hitting a league-best .435 with nine runs scored, five two-base hits, one triple and 14 RBI.

To be nominated for the squad, a student-athlete must have a 3.3 or better cumulative GPA and be in his or her second year both competitively and academically at a school.

Hammer and the MAC West Division co-leading Rockets (23-20, 12-6 MAC) return to action this weekend at fellow division frontrunner Central Michigan (24-20, 12-6 MAC) in an important league series. Friday’s opener from Theunissen Stadium is slated for 3:05 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday contests will begin at 2:05 p.m. and 1:05 p.m., respectively.

UT has been picked to finish second in the West Division behind the reigning division champion Chippewas.
