The Office of the Provost is recruiting instructors from all undergraduate colleges to be Equity Champions for fall semester as part of the Student Experience Project, a national initiative by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities to improve success.

An important part of UToledo’s efforts to support retention and success and reduce equity gaps for students, Equity Champions provide a small group of gateway course instructors an opportunity to work in tandem each semester to develop and test small changes that enhance the student experience in their classes.

Equity Champions volunteer to be active participants in a community of practice, to make evidence-based changes in their classrooms and to use a tool to gather feedback on student’s experiences in the course. All commit to improving belonging, sense of community and growth mindset through their work together.

Although initially focused on the Colleges of Engineering and Natural Sciences and Mathematics, participation is now open to gateway instructors from all undergraduate colleges.

If interested in participating as an equity champion for fall 2021, visit the UToledo Student Experience Project website for more information and a link to the application. Applications are due by Friday, May 28.

Between the fall 2020 and spring 2021 semester, 30 instructors across campus served as Equity Champions.

An overview of their accomplishments inside the classroom and the data to support the increase on social connection and sense of safety and belonging also is available on the Student Experience Project website.
