Last year the federal government established Juneteenth as a federal holiday commemorating the official end of slavery in the United States. The University of Toledo updated its holidays policy to add Juneteenth National Independence Day.
The holiday falls on a Sunday in 2022. UToledo will observe the Juneteenth National Independence Day with no classes held and academic and support offices on both campuses closed on Monday, June 20. Employees who follow the clinical holiday calendar will observe the holiday on Sunday, June 19.
The new national holiday recognizes the symbolic day that marks when news of emancipation reached the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865.
