Aligned with the key initiative to modernize human resources, The University of Toledo is investing in the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) experience for faculty and staff through a new partnership with FMLASource.
The company, which specializes in managing FMLA leave, will be the new point of contact to initiate FMLA requests, make determinations and track leaves of absence effective July 1.
The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job protected leave to eligible employees for certain family and medical reasons.
“FMLA is a compliance-oriented and transaction-driven process, and this change provides for added consistency and faster turnaround times,” said Mark Bercheni, senior director of total rewards in UToledo Human Resources Department. “FMLASource provides an expert service team and multiple means of interaction for employees. This collaboration will provide UToledo management and staff with an improved customer experience.”
FMLASource provides expanded access to a representative from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 p.m., 24-hour access through its website and mobile app, determinations by qualified FMLA specialists, and increased communication on receipt of documentation. Decision packets will be sent within 48 hours.
Employees who are on FMLA leave as well as all supervisors have been notified of the transition. Faculty and staff currently on FMLA leave will be transferred to FMLASource.
“Throughout the month of June, we have been providing employees and supervisors with training, communication and detailed information about this change,” Bercheni said.
