On Friday, Aug. 17, new students at The University of Toledo will be welcomed into the Rocket family at the New Student Convocation.

The convocation will begin at 4 p.m. in Savage Arena, where new students will learn about campus life and get tips on how to be successful in their academic careers. They will hear from a variety of speakers, who will give them advice and tools to use during that all-important first year.

After convocation, students are encouraged to attend a barbecue; there’ll be free food, a DJ, inflatable activities, photo booth opportunities and giveaways. Sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs, the event will be held outside of Savage Arena in lot 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. Students will have the chance to interact with faculty on an informal basis and meet other new students.

“We are excited to welcome our new UT Rockets to campus for the fall 2012 semester,” said Sabina Serratos, associate director of the Office of Student Involvement. “The After Convocation Barbeque is a signature program that we are very proud of as it provides our students with a sneak peek of what is to come for their first semester of college.

“Full of Rocket pride, our faculty, staff and student leaders are eager to meet the new faces of the new freshman class.”

In order for students to attend the barbecue, lot 5 will close during the afternoon of Wednesday, Aug. 15, to allow all cars to vacate before setup for the event begins.
