UT vying for Spirit Cup as part of College Colors Day

In anticipation of the kickoff of the 2014 college football season, The University of Toledo is participating in the Spirit Cup competition as part of the 10th annual College Colors Day celebration.

web college-colors-dayThe unique holiday is dedicated to promoting the traditions and spirit of the Toledo college experience. Organizations, classrooms and fans are encouraged to wear midnight blue and gold.

This year, fans can support the Rockets through the Spirit Cup competition, which is a points-based rivalry that utilizes social media platforms to crown its champion. Fans can earn points for Toledo by showcasing their school spirit on Twitter and Instagram using #collegecolors and #ToledoTough. Bonus points can be earned by sharing those posts via the newly created College Colors app, which is available for download.

The school with the most points at the end of the competition will be crowned the Spirit Cup champion and receive a $10,000 donation toward its general scholarship fund.

Fans also can register at CollegeColorsDay.com for a chance to win a trip for two to the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship. Full competition and sweepstakes details are available on the website.

The Spirit Cup competition runs through Thursday, Aug. 28, at 11:59 p.m.

Winners of both the Spirit Cup competition and the College Football Playoff trip will be announced on College Colors Day, Friday, Aug. 29, via CollegeColorsDay.com.

In conjunction with the competition and the sweepstakes, fans will have the opportunity to support the College Football Playoff’s philanthropic initiative, Extra Yard for Teachers. The program, which provides classroom resources, professional development opportunities and a recognition program for teachers, will receive $1 for every click a fan makes on the Extra Yard for Teachers ad within the College Colors app.

More than 12,000 retail locations across the country are participating with specialty themed College Colors Day retail displays.

The Collegiate Licensing Co. represents nearly 200 collegiate institutions, including 25 bowl games and the College Football Playoff, among others.
