International music professor to speak Aug. 25

Music education is important for elementary students, and it’s a recurring theme of Dr. Masafumi Ogawa’s work.

Ogawa, professor of music education at Yokohama National University in Japan, will give a talk titled “Music Education for Elementary Schools in Japan from a Global Perspective” Monday, Aug. 25, at 4:15 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree in voice and a master of music education degree from the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music, and a doctorate in music education from Indiana University.

Prior to joining Yokohama National University, Ogawa worked at Oita University, Ibaraki University and Joetsu University of Education.

He has published articles in several major music education journals, including the International Journal of Music Education and Philosophy of Music Education Review.
