Senior Otto Black and sophomore Colin Joseph recently finished first at a 2015 U.S. Golf Association’s Four Ball Qualifier Event at the Four Bridges Country Club in Liberty Township, Ohio.
Black and Joseph totaled 10 birdies and eight pars to shoot a combined 10-under par 62 and qualify for next summer’s Amateur Four Ball Championship at Winged Foot Golf Club May 21-25 in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
The duo posted a three-shot victory over its nearest competitor at the qualifying event and will be one of two teams to advance to next spring’s championships.
In 2015-16, Black ranked fourth in the Mid-American Conference and second on the team with a 73.6 stroke average, en route to earning first-team all-league recognition. He competed in 10 tournaments and shot par or better on 10 occasions, the second-highest total on the squad.
Joseph registered a 78.0 stroke average in 10 events in his first year wearing the midnight blue and gold. His top performance was a third-place finish at 13-over par 229 (77-74-78) at the Rocket Individual Classic (Oct. 27-28).
The duo continued its excellent play over the weekend to help Toledo claim the team title at the Notre Dame Kickoff Challenge at the Warren Golf Course. Black (67-71) led the way for the Rockets after firing a four-under par 138 to finish tied for second at the season-opening event, while Joseph (72-74) was close behind and shot four-over par 146 to place ninth.
Black and Joseph and the Rockets will return to the links in a couple weeks when they participate in the Northern Intercollegiate Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 12-13, in DeKalb, Ill.
