Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to hold signs and march to support the Caravan for Peace, which will be on Main Campus Wednesday, Sept. 5.

The caravan is crossing the country to call for the end of violence associated with the drug wars on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Participants are encouraged to line up along Central Avenue opposite St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2770 W. Central Ave, at 1:30 p.m.

At 2:30, there will be a Walk in Solidarity through UT’s Main Campus from Bancroft Street to Dorr Street.

There also will be a press conference at 3 p.m. at Corpus Christi University Parish, 2955 Dorr St.

The convoy will stop in Toledo as it travels from San Diego to Washington, D.C. Up to 80 “Caravaneros” are touring 23 U.S. cities.

Some of the group’s goals are to combat the “failed strategies of the ‘War on Drugs’ [that] have led to ‘the new Jim Crow,’” according to caravanforpeace.org. The group also is protesting that the United States ranks first in the world in “incarcerating its own citizens.”

Many speakers in the national caravan are victims of violence related to the War on Drugs in Mexico who will share their stories and experiences.

The local event is being sponsored by the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (Toledo), Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition, Pax Christi, the UT Program in Law and Social Thought, the UT Women’s and Gender Studies Department, and Phi Alpha Theta, the History Honor Society, UT chapter.

Students interested in learning more about the local walks can contact Dr. Cynthia Ingham, UT assistant professor of history, at cynthia.ingham@utoledo.edu or contact wilpftoledo@gmail.com.
