Senior Piyathida Chaiyapan finished as the co-champion and Toledo opened its fall season with a solid fourth-place showing at Illinois State’s Redbird Invitational in Normal Sunday.

Chaiyapan registered a career-best three-round score of six over par 222 (74-70-78) to lead the Rockets.

The host Redbirds captured the team title with a team score of 53 over par 917 and carded an impressive round Sunday of seven over par 295. Toledo registered a team score of 929, three strokes behind second-place Southern Illinois (926) and one behind third-place Ball State (928).

“I’m very pleased with Piyathida’s play and it’s great to see her begin her senior season on such a high note,” Toledo Head Coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. “It’s also a good way for the team to begin the year, and we’re going to look to build on the momentum we’ve established next weekend when we go to Michigan State.”

Sophomore Kate Hoops finished alone in 14th place at 15 over par 231 (76-79-76), with junior Allison Schultz just five strokes back tied for 21st place at 20 over 236 (77-79-80). Freshman Becky Martin tied for 35th place in her collegiate debut at 24 over 240 (78-83-79), and freshman Stephanie St-Jean tied for 75th place at 45 over 261 (85-86-90). Freshman Lauren Stephens competed as an individual and tied for 44th place at 27 over par 243 (77-90-76).

Toledo will return to action this weekend with a trip to East Lansing, Mich., for the Mary Fossum Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17-18.
