“American Masters: Becoming Helen Keller” premieres at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, locally on WGTE.

Nielsen, the author of several books about Keller, was interviewed for the film.

In a preview of the documentary posted on the PBS website, Nielsen discusses how Keller became interested in politics and read extensively about socialism.

“She wanted to know why some people were poor and some people were not,” Nielsen said in the interview. “She thought that was incredibly unjust. And she began to look at why that was the case.”

Nielsen’s books about Keller include “Beyond the Miracle Worker: The Remarkable Life of Anne Sullivan Macy and Her Extraordinary Friendship with Helen Keller,” “Helen Keller: Selected Writings” and “The Radical Lives of Helen Keller.”
