Every year, many families in northwest Ohio are unable to buy gifts for the holidays. The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership wants to help change that and is encouraging participation in the Salvation Army’s Adopt-a-Family Program.

The University of Toledo began participating more than 10 years ago in this program. The Salvation Army and UT are accepting sponsors for the program. The form can be found at https://orgsync.com/102331/forms/228848.

This Holiday SeasonThere were more than 1,400 applications submitted by families requesting help in the Toledo area this year, according to said Nico Covarrubias, graduate assistant in the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership.

“We just encourage people to share what they have with families this year who can’t provide for their own families this year,” Covarrubias said.

Sponsor forms are due by Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m.

Sponsors have the option of choosing a family size they wish to assist. Sponsors are asked to supply gifts and food for their assigned family and are asked to provide the gifts unwrapped. Sponsors may provide gift wrap, but it is not required.

Gifts will be due by Thursday, Dec. 8, at 5 p.m. to the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership.

Sponsors are to provide three or four new gifts per child as well as a sufficient amount of money for a complete meal according to the size of the family.

Last year, UT was able to help more than 30 families through the program.

For those who may not have the means to adopt a family, the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership encourages them to donate to Toys for Tots.
