The Ohio State Highway Patrol and The University of Toledo held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the shared police facility on the southwest corner of Dorr Street and Secor Road.
The Safety Center replaces the UToledo Police Department offices in the Transportation Building and the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s post on Airport Highway near Swanton. The combined facility features separate spaces for each department, but the agencies share some areas, such as training rooms, interview rooms and in-custody processing space.
Planning for this project began several years earlier when the opportunity to partner with one another presented itself. A joint location lessens costs for both agencies and increases security around campus, benefitting the community. For the Patrol, the central location provides quicker access to interstate highways and high-traffic corridors in the Toledo area.
“Ensuring a safe and welcoming campus community is among our top priorities here at The University of Toledo,” said UToledo Interim President Gregory Postel. “We are proud that through this project we are able to both enhance public safety and strengthen our partnership with the Ohio State Highway Patrol.”
“Today could not have been possible without everyone working together to achieve a common goal,” said Colonel Richard S. Fambro, Patrol superintendent. “The mutual benefits of the partnership were readily apparent. I am confident this building will enable us to continue to meet our mission objectives and serve as an integral member of this community for many years to come.”
