Students interested in pursuing a career in cancer care can learn more about The University of Toledo’s Radiation Therapy Program during an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center.
The event will give prospective students an opportunity to learn about the radiation therapy profession, meet program faculty and current students, tour program spaces and equipment, and speak with an academic advisor about pursuing a career in the field.

“Our program was built to prepare students with the knowledge, skills and clinical experience they need to become exceptional radiation therapists,” said Kelsey Hoffman, radiation therapist at the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center and director of the Radiation Therapy Program. “Throughout the curriculum, students build on what they learn through didactic instruction, hands-on laboratory experiences and four clinical rotations across a variety of treatment settings.”
Radiation therapists are members of the cancer care team who use highly precise radiation technology to deliver prescribed treatments to patients with cancer and other diseases. UToledo’s Bachelor of Science in Radiation Therapy gives students hands-on laboratory experience within a working radiation oncology clinic, clinical education across an extensive network of affiliated cancer centers and instruction from professionals actively working in the field. Together, these experiences prepare graduates for the advanced technology and complex patient care demands of a profession with a strong need for qualified radiation therapists.
The 120-semester-hour program begins with two years of pre-specialization coursework on Main Campus before students complete two years of professional training on the Health Science Campus and in clinical settings throughout Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. The professional curriculum spans the full scope of radiation therapy practice, with coursework in patient care, sectional anatomy, radiation therapy principles and techniques, imaging, radiation physics, radiation biology, treatment planning and dosimetry, quality assurance and professional practice.
“Students learn to safely deliver highly precise radiation treatments using advanced technology while never losing sight of the patient behind the treatment,” Hoffman said. “Preparing students to enter this profession with both the confidence and compassion to make a meaningful impact on someone’s life is what makes this program so special.”
The UToledo Radiation Therapy Program has completed the programmatic accreditation review process and received full accreditation from the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.
