Lawrence B. Solum, an internationally recognized expert on legal theory, will deliver the Stranahan Lecture at noon, Tuesday, March 22, in the Law Center Auditorium.
His free, public lecture is titled “Virtue and Law.”
What makes a good judge? Does a good judge, when faced with a law that he or she believes is wicked, disregard the law and rule according to justice? Or would that itself be unjust? Solum will address these questions during his talk.
Solum is the John E. Cribbet Professor of Law and Philosophy at the University of Illinois College of Law and the co-director of the Institute for Law and Philosophy.
A prolific scholar, he has authored numerous works, and he recently co-edited the first anthology on the relationship between virtue and law, Virtue Jurisprudence.
Solum has delivered lectures nationally and internationally, including the Notre Dame Natural Law Lecture. His Legal Theory Blog is the premier website for that topic.
“Virtue matters. Parents seek to instill virtue in their children, citizens choose political leaders based on character, and Americans want virtuous judges upholding the law,” said Lee J. Strang, UT professor of law. “Professor Solum, the world’s expert on the relationship between virtue and law, will first describe virtue ethics as a distinct approach to ethics. Then he will tie those lessons to law and judging. Professor Solum’s lecture is sure to provoke conversation.”
The Stranahan National Issues Forum is a joint program of The University of Toledo College of Law and its chapter of the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies. It is made possible by an endowment from the Stranahan Foundation. Solum will join a list of high-profile speakers who have delivered the Stranahan Lecture at the College of Law.
