Schissler joined UT at the beginning of spring semester from the University of San Diego, where he created and served as director of its One-Stop Student Center.

“In my first few weeks here in Toledo, I have been impressed with how student-friendly the campus is and the great group of people here who truly want to help students,” he said. “My motto has always been, ‘Hire a heart and train a brain,’ and the staff here already have the heart. Not only are they friendly, but they listen and solve problems.”

UT’s Rocket Solution Central is very similar to the One-Stop Student Center Schissler created in California, and he said he looks forward to lending his expertise to that operation. Schissler also will oversee new student orientation, financial aid and enrollment operations. His role is an expanded version of the director of financial aid position that was vacated when Carol Baumgartner retired.

Schissler said he looks forward to working with the team to be even more student-centered by reducing the complexities of the business side of being a student. The Financial Aid Office already has begun reviewing all policies to see where processes can be streamlined.

“Steve brings an extremely student-centered approach that fits perfectly with the mission and values of The University of Toledo,” said Dr. Cam Cruickshank, vice president for enrollment management and online education. “His varied experience throughout the financial operations of higher education will be an asset to students and the University.”

Schissler’s experience also includes serving as bursar of Xavier University in Cincinnati, assistant bursar at the University of Dayton, and assistant controller of Wittenberg University.

He has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Wright State University and a master’s degree in interdisciplinary education from the University of Dayton.
