Ebola virus disease causes sudden fever, internal and external bleeding, and has a fatality rate of 90 percent. There is no known vaccine.
The Health Education Alliance for Life and Longevity (HEALL) will host an educational panel about the recent outbreak in West Africa Wednesday, Sept. 3, at noon in Health Education Building Room 100 on The University of Toledo’s Health Science Campus.
Shifa Kanjwal, third-year medical student and president of HEALL, said the group wanted to learn more about the virus and how to deal with it as medical professionals.
Dr. Eileen Baker, UT assistant professor of emergency medicine and director of the medical ethics curriculum, and Dr. Isabel Novella, UT professor of medical microbiology and immunology, will speak at the forum.
Kanjwal said HEALL’s goal is to create awareness about the outbreak and learn about the pathophysiology of the virus, the ethical issues surrounding vaccine distribution, and emergency management of the disease.
