Kyle D. Bergen, a third-year student in the UT Doctor of Pharmacy Program, has been appointed to the University’s Board of Trustees.
His appointment began when it was announced by the governor’s office Aug. 7. His term will expire July 1, 2020.
Bergen exudes enthusiasm for the University and all the possibilities it offers.“UT is a unique campus in terms of the opportunities that are presented to students. Whether it’s the ability to pick from an almost endless list of majors, to becoming involved with any of the 300-plus student organizations on campus, to working with excellent faculty both in and outside the classroom, there are options for every student to gain something from UT,” he said. “Having experienced my fair share of these opportunities, I know the impact they can have on students.
“I want to make sure that when the board makes a decision, that the members are fully aware of how the student experience could be affected.”
The native of West Chester, Ohio, will serve on the Academic and Student Affairs Committee.
“When you look at the core mission, vision and values of UT, you see that at the center of each one is the student,” Bergen said. “I hope that the University continues to run day to day with its mission, vision and values focused on the student.
“And two years from now, I would like to see the faculty, staff and administrators continue to innovate and improve our University to better serve the extremely diverse group of students here.”
This semester, Bergen, who plans to graduate from the Doctor of Pharmacy Program in 2020, will be a drug information teaching assistant in the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
“I will help run classes designed to help the first- and second-year pharmacy students practice using the many different sources of information that are available to pharmacists,” he said.
In addition, he is a pharmacy intern at Toledo Family Pharmacy.
His involvement on campus stoked his passion for the University. He is an alumnus of Sigma Phi Epsilon who mentors fraternity brothers, and he served as treasurer of Blue Key National Honor Society and as president of the Pre-Professional Organization for Pharmacy. Bergen also has been involved with the Community Care Free Medical Clinic, UT’s Big Event, RockeTHON, Relay for Life, Songfest, Colleges Against Cancer, Homecoming, Pharmacy Student Council, and the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Alumni Affiliate Board.
“When I came to Toledo as a freshman, I was not nearly as outgoing, as driven, or as mature as I am now,” Bergen said. “By getting involved in organizations, meeting students from different areas with different backgrounds with different majors, and trying new things, I was able to grow.”
Bergen joins fellow student trustee Hedyeh Elahinia, who has been working with the board for the last year.
