The University of Toledo will partner with Toledo Public Schools (TPS) on a project to use more technology in mathematics instruction.
The project, “Using Technology to Enhance the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics: Let’s Be Smart,” is supported with more than $65,000 in funding from the Ohio Board of Regents Improving Teacher Quality State Grant Program. “Smart” in the title is a direct reference to including smart board (digital blackboard) technologies into teachers’ pedagogy.
The professional development project is a collaborative effort between UT and TPS to support teachers in grades seven through 12 as they address the Ohio Content Standards in math. The project includes introductory sessions after school and an intensive nine-day workshop in June.
Teachers from the school district’s Bowsher, Start and Scott high schools and Byrnedale, DeVeaux, East Broadway, McTigue and Robinson middle schools are participating.
UT faculty Bill Weber, Tod Shockey and Alessandro Arsie will direct the project. Weber and Shockey are associate professors in the Judith Herb College of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Arsie is an assistant professor in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Mathematics Department.
The project was designed around needs that were identified by Susan McMillan, TPS director of mathematics, and the district’s mathematics chairs, as well as student achievement data.
