The University of Toledo’s Shah Center for Engineering Career Development will host the Spring 2021 Virtual Engineering Career Expo from noon to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24.
The event is a networking and hiring experience for students to connect with companies. The expo is for UToledo College of Engineering students who are enrolled in the mandatory co-op program, as well as UToledo Engineering alumni searching for full-time opportunities.
The current job outlook for engineering students at The University of Toledo Engineering College continues to be bright despite the pandemic. The Shah Center for Engineering Career Development continues to assist students in securing industry co-ops. Through virtual appointments, networking events, Career Expos, workshops and more, they have assisted with more than 1,000 student co-op placements with employer partners regionally and nationally since summer 2020.
An alternative co-op course, entitled the Academic Industry Immersion Seminar (AIIS), also was developed last summer for students unable to secure an industry co-op due to the pandemic. The alternative co-op provided students the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary team case studies with employers such as Dana Corporation, Ohio EPA, Applied Environmental Solutions and Zimmer Biomet. The AIIS was 43% of the total co-op placements in summer 2020; however, through beneficial partnerships the College of Engineering has with industry partners, industry co-ops have significantly increased and, to date, only 10% of the spring 2021 co-ops are made up of students in the AIIS Course.
The UToledo undergraduate integrated engineering co-op program is one of only eight in the country and many students indicate that the co-op training is the reason they came to UToledo. Students experience a full year of professional engineering experience before they graduate and co-op businesses are able to work with these students and determine how the student fits within their organization.
More information can be found on the College of Engineering Career Development website or by contacting the Director of the co-op program, Angie Gorny at Angela.Gorny@utoledo.edu.
