Physical activity is just one strategy to improve physical and mental well-being.

Just 30 minutes of regular, moderate exercise each day is effective in improving health and reducing the risk of many diseases. To help all University employees get active this spring and stay active heading into summer, Healthy U is hosting the Get Active, Stay Active challenge.

The program will challenge all UToledo employees to increase their physical activity through weekly encouragement related to the 2021 American Heart Association Heart walk, which is sponsored by UTMC.

Participants do not have to be registered for Healthy U to join Get Active, Stay Active.

“We’re glad to partner with the American Heart Association to offer guidance for employees to increase their activity, as the weather improves and we’re able to safely participate in outdoor activities with family and small groups of friends or colleagues,” said Andrea Masters, Healthy U wellness consultant.

“We’re especially excited to offer this program to all employees, and hopefully once they get to test-drive a Healthy U program they’ll be encouraged to take advantage of this benefit going forward.”

Utilizing the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk app, participants will complete weekly activity goals and challenges to earn points toward incentives that include wireless earbuds, lunch bundles, fitness gear, blood pressure cuffs and a Fitbit Charge 4. The Heart Walk app is available in Apple’s App Store and Google Play.

Visit the Rocket Wellness events’ webpage to sign up for Get Active, Stay Active by Thursday, April 1, to begin earning points and to qualify for incentives. The program runs through Friday, April 30.

The University and UTMC also are sponsoring community walks and runs this spring.

Employees who are eager to get a jump on their spring activity can enter for a chance to win a free entry to the Glass City Marathon 5K or relay by pre-registering for Get Active, Stay Active by Friday, March 26, and logging in at least 150 minutes of physical activity between March 22-28. Registration details are available on the Get Active, Stay Active event page.

Employees also are invited to join UTMC’s Heart Walk team to raise awareness and funds in the fight against heart disease. The digital experience will begin at 9:15 a.m., Saturday, May 1, and participants can walk where they are, tracking their activity with the Heart Walk app for a chance to win T-shirts, hats and other prizes.
