In the latest episode of Prescribed Listening, Dr. Mohamed Omballi outlines a new, minimally invasive treatment option at The University of Toledo Medical Center for patients suffering from emphysema.

A chronic lung condition often brought on by smoking, emphysema causes significant shortness of breath. Omballi, an interventional pulmonologist at UTMC, is the only physician in the region currently offering a novel treatment called bronchoscopic lung volume reduction.

The procedure uses small one-way valves to keep air out of the lung’s most damaged parts while allowing healthier lung regions to function more normally — allowing patients to breathe easier and potentially reduce their dependence on oxygen.

Prescribed Listening, a podcast from UTMC, features a new provider each week sharing insight into their medical specialty.
