The University of Toledo’s Upward Bound program will continue to help prepare high school students for college through 2027 thanks to renewed funding from the U.S. Department of Education.

The year-round college preparatory program that has been helping local high school students succeed for 55 years will receive $482,741 for the first year and additional funding for a total of five years.

“Our program has shown great success in enhancing the educational and social environment that strengthens the academic skills and motivation of our low-income and first-generation participants to pursue a college education and graduate with a degree,” said Pamela Rogers, director of UToledo Upward Bound.

The funding allows the program to serve up to 100 high school students a year from low-income families and from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree.

Rogers said 100% of participants have graduated high school, and 67% go on to college.

UToledo Upward Bound offers a six-week summer program on campus where students live on campus and attend academic classes. This summer 56 students are enrolled in the six-week program.

During the school year, the Upward Bound program offers workshops on taking tests, study skills and interviewing, as well as tutoring and financial aid advice. Overall, 100 students are enrolled this year.
