The University of Toledo’s Department of Neurosciences is accepting applications for its inaugural Summer Biomedical Science Program in Bioinformatics.

Beginning Monday, June 12, this virtual camp will be 24 days of educational sessions, workshops, team meetings and keynote lectures. Students will login from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays for four weeks, excluding Monday, June 19, and Monday and Tuesday, July 3 and July 4, holidays when the camp will not meet, and also meet Saturdays to discuss projects.

There will be an additional fifth week of camp, in early August, for revisions to submitted manuscripts, if necessary.

“We are very excited to offer this camp for high school students excited to learn about biomedical research and the field of medicine,” said Dr. Robert Smith, camp director and chair of the Department of Neurosciences. “The Summer Biomedical Science Program in Bioinformatics gives an opportunity for students to work directly with our College of Medicine and Life Sciences faculty to ask and answer important questions in various biomedical fields.”

Those accepted into the camp can work to:

•  Make a novel discovery using bioinformatics and data science techniques;

•  Publish a scientific paper in a peer-reviewed biomedical research journal; and

•  Complete a challenging experience that will provide a strong foundation for college.

“This is the type of experience that gives advanced students a launch into competitive career paths, such as medicine,” Dr. Smith said.

The camp registration fee is $2,800 per student and the application deadline is March 31.
