October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and The University of Toledo Information Security Office has an online information hub to educate, engage and empower the UToledo community.

The hub offers educational information about critical topics including phishing attacks, password security, data encryption and safe browsing habits, and throughout the month, new articles, guidance, tips and materials will be shared with the UToledo community.

By emphasizing the significance of online safety, UToledo aims to increase awareness and help the community have a better understanding of how to protect yourself online.

“The federal government has designated this as Cybersecurity Awareness Month for the last 19 years,” said Dr. Bill McCreary, vice president, chief information officer and chief technology officer. “This year the theme is ‘Secure Our World,’ which focuses on our cybersecurity habits.  These behaviors, otherwise referred to as ‘cyber hygiene,’ deal with how we as individuals operate in our digital world. The facts are that our digital world is borderless, and no organization can deploy enough technology protections that can overcome gaps in cyber hygiene.

“Given that cybercriminals have targeted higher education and healthcare organizations, it is imperative that we all operate at the top of our game in terms of cyber awareness. Our personal cyber hygiene is key to keeping the UToledo family safe from the relentless attacks we continuously encounter.”

“Cybersecurity education is crucial for every user to navigate through the ever-growing digital world without falling victim to the potential cyber-attacks,” added Dr. Weiqing Sun, a professor in the Department of Computer Science Engineering Technology and director of the master’s programs in cyber security. “The University of Toledo is home to a number of high-quality cybersecurity programs in the effort to address the cybersecurity education and cybersecurity workforce shortage issue which will affect all the sectors in the society.”
