Nicholas Weaver’s Rocket journey began with a conversation.
A student at Bowling Green State University, Weaver was curious about pursuing a degree in environmental studies. After talking with Dr. Todd Crail, a Distinguished University Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Sciences, and Dr. Jonathan Bossenbroek, chair of the UToledo Department of Environmental Sciences and professor of ecology, he knew what he needed to do: transfer to The University of Toledo.
Now a senior majoring in environmental studies, Nicholas Weaver said his transfer decision from BGSU to UToledo was “very easy.”
“They got me hooked,” Weaver said. “I heard about faculty who care, students who want to make a difference and a real sense of community. Everyone I talked to honestly made my decision very easy.
“I saw an opportunity for personal growth.”
Now a senior, Weaver said some of his best moments as a student was over the summer working as part of the crew of Greening UToledo through Service Learning (GUTS), an on-campus student project funded by the Student Green Fund.
“It has been one of the most beneficial and fun things I’ve ever done,” he said. “I worked with amazing people and learned so much. I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to help make UToledo a more beautiful place with some amazing native gardens. I’ve also met some great people at UToledo, some of whom I consider friends for life. The labs I’ve taken have been interesting and engaging, and I’ve learned a lot in my classes that will prepare me for a great future.
“The students and faculty that I’ve met so far at UToledo allowed me to express myself and pushed me to do my best, even if it was something I wasn’t confident with,” Weaver added. “This kind of support has helped me to surpass my own expectations and given me the drive to set even higher goals.
And just as Rocket journey began with a conversation, he offers these words of advice to students who are considering their own futures at The University of Toledo.
“I would tell them to be excited, and to be a part of as many things as they can to make the most of their time here,” Weaver said. “Talk to professors, meet as many people as you can and be engaged because the more effort you put in, the more you’ll get out of it.
“The University of Toledo is a great place to expand yourself and learn a bunch of cool things that will help you in the future.”
