To help raise awareness about the dangers of cigarettes, vaping and other nicotine use, The University of Toledo is joining the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout on Thursday, Nov. 16, for a virtual presentation.

Dr. James Willey, a pulmonologist at UTMC and professor of medicine in the College of Medicine and Life Sciences, will address the harmful effects of cigarettes and nicotine and offer guidance on the reasons to be tobacco-free in a virtual presentation at 6 p.m. via WebEx. His discussion is open to the community.

According to the American Cancer Society:

•  Nearly 34 million American adults smoke cigarettes, and smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world.

•  Smoking causes an estimated 480,000 deaths ever year, or about 1 in 5 deaths.

•  Additionally, vaping, or e-cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco are also linked to numerous health concerns.

Willey’s discussion begins at 6 p.m., Thursday, and will be available via this WebEx link.
