Beginning this month, visitors will see banners lining the Student Recreational Center track featuring vibrant colors, graphics and messages highlighting fundamental aspects of healthy relationships.

While different, each banner will reflect themes of respect and communication, and the importance of active listening, empathy and open dialogue in building strong and lasting relationships.

Promotional Graphic announcing February is Healthy Relationships Month.Healthy Relationship Month, observed throughout February, is a unique opportunity to shine a spotlight on positive connections. Whether it is a romantic partnership, friendship or family ties, all relationships require ongoing effort and attention; the core of a healthy relationship is having boundaries, open communication, trust and consent. Spending quality time together, sharing activities and expressing gratitude contribute to the positive energy that sustains healthy connections.

“I am no relationship expert, but there are a few primary thoughts that come to mind regarding healthy relationships,” said Valerie Simmons-Walston, special assistant to the president for Community Engagement and Strategic Partnerships. “It’s so important for trust, loyalty, honesty and respect to be front of mind concerning your partner. The Title IX office does a great job in educating this entire campus about consent and boundaries which are vital to all healthy relationships.”

Individuals are encouraged to take stock of their relationships and set intentions for the future. The month acts as a catalyst for positive change, whether that is expressing gratitude, resolving conflicts or simply spending quality time together.

Students also have the chance to visit Title IX’s table every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Thompson Student Union and from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center for “Consent for Kisses”  to learn about consent culture and get a goody bag of Hershey’s Kisses. Students, faculty and staff can also learn about what it takes to safely intervene in situations and how to be a prosocial bystander by attending Title IX’s Bringing in the Bystander series. For more information including dates and times of the online events, visit the Title IX Invonet website.

The quality of relationships directly impacts well-being. Healthy Relationship Month stands as a reminder to prioritize and celebrate the connections that bring joy, support and fulfillment. As individuals and local communities actively engage in the celebration, the hope is that the lessons learned and the positive habits formed during this month will continue to resonate throughout the rest of the year, contributing to a more connected and compassionate society.
