UToledo Engineering Dean Honored as Engineer of the Year

Dr. Michael Toole, dean of the College of Engineering at The University of Toledo, will be honored as Engineer of the Year by Toledo Society of Professional Engineers at its 2024 Engineers Week Banquet on Thursday, Feb. 22.

In his seventh year as dean of the College of Engineering, Toole has been a professional engineer since 1987.

Dr. Michael Toole, dean of the College of Engineering at The University of Toledo, will be honored as Engineer of the Year by Toledo Society of Professional Engineers at its 2024 Engineers Week Banquet on Thursday, Feb. 22.

He received a bachelor’s in science in civil engineering from Bucknell University, and a master’s of science in civil engineering and Ph.D. in technology strategy from M.I.T.

Before becoming a dean at UToledo in August 2017, Toole spent 18 years at Bucknell University as associate dean of Engineering, as a professor of civil and environmental engineering, director of the Grand Challenges Scholars Program and director of the Institute for Leadership in Technology and Management.

His scholarship focuses on prevention through design, in which designers explicitly consider the safety of construction and maintenance workers, and he initiated and maintains a design for construction safety website.

Toole has published more than 25 peer-reviewed publications that have been cited over 2,500 times and has given more than 50 invited presentations to professional audiences.
