Dema Herzallah wants to impact her community by bettering healthcare. Now set to graduate Saturday, May 4 with her bachelor of science degree in nursing, Herzallah intends to do just that.

“I am the type of person who absolutely gives what I can to my patients and even the people around me in my personal life,” Herzallah said. “I believe that having good health is a big blessing, and to be able to help improve one’s health status through my abilities as a nurse is why I chose healthcare.”

CELEBRATING SUCCESS: UToledo recognizes the Class of 2024 with a series of stories featuring students receiving their degrees at spring commencement.

Born in Palestine and raised in Toledo, Herzallah came to UToledo to pursue a career in healthcare, as well as opportunities she found through programs and involvement networks.

At first, though, Herzallah had a different plan when she started her first semester.

“My previous major was exercise science/pre-physician assistant,” she said. “I thought I was truly set with my major in high school and I am kind of a big planner, so I was doubting myself. I decided to research more into nursing and learn more about their role in healthcare. By shadowing nurses, I realized that they provide an increased level of care for patients at a more intimate level. While reflecting on my choice, I realized that it suited my personality more.”

During the transition from exercise science to nursing, Herzallah said she was struggling with finding her path. This led her to Eric Gullufsen, academic advisor for the College of Nursing.

“Dema is not only an excellent student nurse but a leader among her nursing peers,” Gullufsen said. “She is thoughtful, hardworking, and compassionate, and will make the kind of Rocket Nurse that we should all be proud of.”

Dema Herzallah graduates Saturday with her bachelor of science degree in nursing.

With her major secured, Herzallah took every chance she could to get involved.

Through the Levis Leadership program, Dema became involved. She a part of the Blue Key National Honor Society, Mortar Board Honor Society, was Vice President and President of the Middle Eastern and North African Association and the secretary for diversity and diversity chair in UToledo’s Student Nursing Association. She was also able to aide in events such as homecoming and Songfest.

“After becoming involved through many opportunities now at this point in my career, I realized how vital it was to my personal growth,” Herzallah said. “These opportunities shaped me into a stronger individual and leader and helped me develop qualities that I want to carry on as a nurse.”

After taking the National Council Licensure Examination that all nursing students must pass to be registered in the state, Herzallah plans to pursue her Master’s of Science in Nursing at UToledo and potentially even her Doctor of Nursing Practice.

In the meantime, she plans to work at ProMedica Toledo Hospital in the cardiology unit.

“For students considering UToledo Nursing, this program has faculty and staff who truly are there for you,” Herzallah said. “Ask as many questions as you like. Take advantage of lab, office hours and clinical. Get involved. Learn more about the people around you and make connections and lifelong friends. Do not be shy, and make sure you make the most of your time at UToledo.”
