A new leader has been named for The University of Toledo Medical Center.
Dan Barbee, who previously served as the chief executive officer of UTMC, is again serving as CEO effective Friday, Nov. 8.
Barbee led the hospital from 2016 until 2020 when he accepted a position as president of rural market for Bon Secours Mercy Health. He also served as interim president of Mercy St. Anne Hospital.
Barbee replaces Rick Swaine, who joined UTMC in 2019 as chief financial officer and was named CEO in 2020.
“Dan has a long relationship with UToledo going back to 2011 and his leadership experience in healthcare, and at UTMC specifically, will be an asset during this period of transition,” UToledo Interim President Matt Schroeder said. “We have an important role in our community as an academic medical center and we are committed to ongoing efforts to optimize UToledo Health to better support the health and well-being of our region.”
A national search is underway for an Executive Vice President for Health Affairs that will lead the University’s clinical enterprise. That individual, once selected, will be positioned to select their clinical leadership team.
Barbee is well known to UToledo. Prior to serving as CEO, he was UTMC’s vice president of clinical services and chief operating officer. He joined the medical center in 2011 as chief nursing officer and associate executive director.
Barbee began his career as a staff nurse at Phoenix Baptist Hospital, he spent a number of years as a traveling nurse and held several roles at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center as a clinical care nurse, clinical manager and director of patient care services.
Barbee has a Bachelor of Nursing degree from Illinois State University Mennonite College of Nursing and Master of Business Administration from University of Phoenix.
