The University of Toledo will receive $225,000 from the state for campus security upgrades.

UToledo plans to use the new funding to expand and upgrade its use of security cameras around campus, particularly in and around Centennial Mall and its residence halls.

The grant, announced earlier this week by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, comes through the state’s Campus Safety Grant Program.

The Campus Safety Grant Program was funded with support from the Ohio legislature in House Bill 2 of the 135th General Assembly. Universities conducted a security and vulnerability assessment to identify areas in need of safety enhancements.

“We are committed to a safe and welcoming campus for our students, employees and visitors,” said Rodney Theis, associate vice president of public safety and chief of police. “This additional support from the state will allow us to increase our camera coverage in high-traffic areas as another tool for campus security.”

This is the third time UToledo has received funding through the state program. Previously, UToledo used Campus Safety Grant funding to enhance first responder radio communication on campus and to install license plate-reading cameras with views of the entrances and exits of Main Campus and Health Science Campus.
