As Ohio prepares to host its annual Severe Weather Awareness Week, The University of Toledo is highlighting the importance of emergency preparedness in the event of a tornado or other severe weather event.
If the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning for Lucas County, the outdoor tornado sirens will be activated and the UToledo Police Department will send a UT Alert text message and email notification.
All students, faculty and staff should promptly seek shelter in the nearest interior room or hall on the lowest level possible, staying away from windows and halls that open to the outside. Classes and other University operations are to be suspended until the warning has expired.
Individuals are encouraged to log into the myUT portal and review their contact information to ensure they can receive UT Alerts. Faculty, staff and students can click on “update address and phone numbers” to view and update their cell phone number, if needed.
Individuals can review the University’s tornado response procedure on the Emergency Preparedness website.
Ohio recognizes Severe Weather Awareness Week each year during the third full week of March. This year’s campaign will run from Sunday, March 16, through Saturday, March 22, with a statewide tornado drill scheduled for 9:50 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19.
Links to other information on policies and procedures for other weather-related emergencies and situations that may impact the operations of the University is available in the menu of the University’s Emergency Preparedness website.
