The UToledo Rocket Career Center in collaboration with the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics recently hosted the DiscoverSTEM Job and Internship Fair at Thompson Student Union.
The inaugural event provided 100 students with the opportunity to connect directly with 20 local employers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, helping them explore career options, gain industry insights and secure internships or full-time positions.
The UToledo Rocket Career Center in collaboration with the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics recently hosted the DiscoverSTEM Job and Internship Fair at Thompson Student Union.
Unlike larger career fairs, the DiscoverSTEM Job and Internship Fair was intentionally designed to be a more intimate event, allowing students to engage in meaningful conversations with recruiters.
“Many students and employers who participated in the event reported that they enjoyed the smaller, niche fair atmosphere,” said Shelly Drouillard, director of the Rocket Career Center. “It enabled both parties to have more in-depth and personalized career conversations.”
The collaboration between the Rocket Career Center and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics was key to the fair’s success. By focusing on employers specifically seeking STEM talent, the event addressed the unique needs of students in science, technology and mathematics fields. This focus ensured that participants could interact with companies aligned with their academic backgrounds and career aspirations.
“I think everyone can benefit from coming to these career fairs,” said Dr. John Plenefisch, associate dean and associate professor at the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. “Finding out what opportunities are out there, practicing your career building skills— that’s what this is all about.”
The DiscoverSTEM Job and Internship Fair reflects UToledo’s commitment to equipping students with the resources and connections necessary for success after graduation. By facilitating direct engagement with industry, the fair not only helps students build strong professional networks but also enhances the University’s reputation for producing highly skilled STEM graduates ready to thrive in the workforce.
For students who missed the fair, the Rocket Career Center offers ongoing support to all students and alumni. More information can be found at the Rocket Career Center’s webpage.
