Two finalists for The University of Toledo’s next provost and executive vice president for academic affairs have been identified by the search committee and will visit campus in January.
Faculty, staff and students are invited to hear presentations and meet the candidates at open forums.
Dr. Amy B. Hietapelto, interim executive vice chancellor for academic affairs and former dean of the Labovitz School of Business and Economics at the University of Minnesota Duluth, will visit campus on Thursday, Jan. 18.
Dr. Abby L. Parrill, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and former interim provost at the University of Memphis, will visit campus on Monday, Jan. 22.
Each forum will run from 8:45 to 10 a.m., and attendees can participate in person or virtually.
Hietapelto’s academic discipline is business, and she holds a doctorate in business administration from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. She has published and presented research on areas including empowerment, leadership, pedagogy, managing change, gender and diversity, and the application of a legal lens to practices in university settings. She has served as interim executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Minnesota Duluth since 2021, and previously as the dean of the university’s Labovitz School of Business of Economics beginning in 2013.

Parrill’s academic discipline is natural science, and she holds a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Arizona. A leading scholar in computation and medicinal chemistry, she has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, co-edited six books and is co-inventor on six issued patents. She was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Memphis in 2019 and served as interim provost between July 2022 and June 2023.

The provost and executive vice president for academic affairs provides executive level leadership and strategic vision for the entire academic mission of the University. As the chief academic officer and the second-ranking executive officer of the University, the provost has operational authority and leadership over academic and faculty affairs, academic policy and academic administration, including all faculty recruitment, hiring, tenure and promotion. UToledo’s next provost will have the additional responsibility for overseeing enrollment management and student affairs.
The goal is to have the provost named soon and in place prior to the 2024-25 academic year.
Dr. Marc Seigar, dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, is the chair of the search committee, with Dr. Melissa Hurst, special assistant to the president for strategic talent development, providing search leadership.
Dr. Scott Molitor currently serves as interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.
