The 20th Annual Health Science Campus Artist Showcase will take place Monday, Feb. 3, through Tuesday, April 1, on the 4th floor of Mulford Library.

This year’s exhibit will feature artwork from 25 artists, including students, faculty and staff in the health sciences from the Health Science and Main campuses, as well as The University of Toledo Medical Center. A variety of 2D and 3D artwork will be exhibited, including paintings, drawings, photography, stoneware and mixed media.

An artist reception will be held on Friday, Feb. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m., also on the 4th floor of Mulford. A lecture will be given at 5:30 p.m. by Gerald Natal, Health and Human Services Librarian and an associate professor in the University Libraries. Natal’s lecture is entitled “The Inside is the Outside: An Introduction to ‘Outsider Art.’”

Natal’s lecture will explore “Outsider Art,” a term originally coined to describe art created outside traditional cultural and artistic boundaries by individuals without formal training, in particular art produced by mentally ill patients.

“It examines how such art gained recognition for its aesthetics and its impact on modern art movements,” he said. “The talk will also delve into themes of self-expression, authenticity, creativity and mental illness, and the evolving definition of art itself.”

“This is an exciting year for the Health Science Campus Artist Showcase, as we celebrate our 20th year,” added HSC Artist Showcase Chair Jodi Jameson. “In 2005, the first showcase was a solo show, featuring the paintings of Associate Professor Emeritus and local artist Paul Brand. Since that time, the showcase has expanded, and many of the same artists – Dr. Brand included – continue to participate year after year. We owe the longevity of the showcase to these artists and their exquisite talents.”

The reception and lecture are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available.
