A high school fair for eighth-graders from Toledo Public Schools will take place Thursday, Feb. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. in UT’s Student Union Auditorium.

TPS_header3TPS Fest will give students making the transition from elementary school to high school a preview of the district’s seven traditional high schools.

“Each school will have displays, booths and representatives who can answer questions from both students and parents,” said Patty Mazur, director of communications for Toledo Public Schools. “We will also be highlighting our 40-plus career technology programs. These are courses students can start taking now in order to better prepare them for college.”

There are different options for each of the high schools in the district. For example, Mazur said that students looking into construction fields choose Rogers High School, and students interested in the field of cosmetology would go to Scott High School.

The fair is being held so students can get a better idea of their learning options and the steps they need to take to register for fall, including the out-of-district process.

Mazur said there will be testimony from at least one TPS parent, information about scheduling and advanced placement classes, and John Adams, UT senior director for early outreach, will speak about the Blue and Gold Scholarships to help reduce the cost of college for students and families, and the value of higher education.

“It is never too early to prepare for college,” Adams said. “We want students and their families to know scholarships are available to them, and encourage them to work hard beginning now and all through high school. They can’t wait until their junior or senior year to get serious about studying.”

Mazur said that a mailed invitation went out to the eighth-graders from private schools as well. The event is open to all eighth-grade students throughout Toledo.
