The University of Toledo’s academic medical center and other clinical operations are being reorganized under UToledo Health.

The University’s Board of Trustees approved Wednesday amending bylaws and government documents of the various healthcare entities to more closely align operations to create greater efficiencies, align strategic goals and objectives, and create opportunities for mutual growth.

“We have been working for the past year to create the optimal structure for UToledo Health that aligns our operations with other leading academic medical centers and positions us for continued growth,” UToledo President Gregory Postel said.

This does not impact the College of Medicine and Life Sciences or the college’s existing academic affiliation agreement with ProMedica.

The UToledo Health unit will be led by a chief physician executive, separate from the CEO of UTMC, both of whom report to the University president. A separate board made up of stakeholder representatives and external members appointed by institutional leadership also will be created to oversee clinical affairs. It will report to the UToledo Board of Trustees and replace the existing Clinical Affairs Committee.

The reorganization of UToledo Health follows successful efforts to stabilize hospital finances and improve clinical operations.

In 2022 UTMC earned a four-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The hospital is one of 895 nationwide to earn a four-star rating in the most recent survey, which included more than 4,500 hospitals. Earlier in the year UTMC had received approval from CMS on an initiative that will generate an additional $25 million through a higher reimbursement rate from Medicaid.

Also in 2022, UTMC received approval to begin operating as a Level II trauma center to expand its ability to care for the most complex trauma cases and set a record for completing 200 successful kidney transplants, including being the first in the region to offer robotic-assisted surgery.

The University’s recent investments in the clinical operations include a new electronic medical records system, new MRI machine and upgrades to the cardiac cath lab, among other projects.
