University of Toledo students shared stories with area families during a literacy-themed community service event on Monday, Feb. 23.

Students, faculty and staff collaborated with the Art Tatum Zone, a local nonprofit led by alumni Calvin and Christine Sweeney, to organize the event, which welcomed families from Toledo’s Junction neighborhood to Toledo Public School’s Jones Leadership Academy of Business.

More than 40 student volunteers participated in the evening’s programming aimed at fostering a love of reading in children and equipping their parents and caregivers with practical strategies to support their literacy development outside of school.

Several UToledo colleges and departments are collaborating on the event, including the Jesup Scott Honors College, the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Studies and the Judith Herb College of Arts, Social Sciences and Education’s Department of Teacher Education, Department of Political Science and Public Administration and Herb Innovation Center.
