The Big Event, the largest, single-day student-run service project at The University of Toledo, is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15.

An annual UToledo event since 2001, the BIG Event’s slogan is “One Big Day, One Big Thanks, One BIG Event,” and its goal is to give back to the Toledo community.

Members of Sigma Phi Epsilon help pick up and haul storm debris at the University’s Stranahan Arboretum. They were among more than 1,200 students, employees and alumni who signed up for the 2023 Big Event.

The Big Event, the largest, single-day student-run service project at The University of Toledo, is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

“This event reflects our commitment as Rockets to uplifting those in our community,” said Shiloh Walz, a senior scheduled to graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in management who is president of the BIG Event. “The BIG Event brings together local students who volunteer their time, nonprofits that benefit from a day of service, and local businesses and UToledo that contribute financially to make it all happen.”

The BIG Event kicks off at The University of Toledo Student Recreation Center at 9:30 a.m. Participants will then depart for their local Toledo service sites to provide a day of service including the Aurora Project Inc., Ronald McDonald House, Islamic Food Bank of Toledo, Toledo Area Metroparks and various community gardens.

This year more than 500 hundred students from dozens of student organizations are expected to volunteer for the community-sponsored event.

“For me, this event is important because Toledo has served as my home for the past four years, and it provides a chance to give back, connect with others and make a tangible difference in the lives of those around us,” she said.

Ashton Widenhoefer, a junior nursing student who serves as director of marketing for the BIG Event, said she joined the student-run service project to help create a positive impact on the community that has given so much to her.

“BIG Event is a reminder of the power of community and demonstrates how even small acts of service can make a lasting impact on those around us. It is a privilege to give back to the community that supports our University, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to do so. I hope fellow Rockets feel the sense of community UT provides through collaborating with different organizations during this event.”
