Fred Espenak, a retired NASA astrophysicist and UToledo alumnus known as “Mr. Eclipse,” shared personal stories about chasing eclipses for more than 50 years as well as what to expect during the April 8 total solar eclipse over Toledo during his Tuesday evening lecture at Doermann Theatre as part of the Doermann Distinguished Lecture.
Espenak, who earned a master’s degree in physics from The University of Toledo in 1976, has curated three websites, written dozens of books and generated thousands of predictions and maps on the topic of eclipses. His photographs of the phenomenon have been published in numerous magazines, and one is featured on a stamp the U.S. Postal Service released to commemorate the most recent total solar eclipse whose path crossed the United States in 2017.
The University of Toledo will host a free, public event to view the solar eclipse on Monday, April 8. Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to experience the eclipse on campus between noon and 6 p.m. Glass Bowl Stadium will welcome guests to its student- and visitor-side stands, offering the best view of the eclipse and commentary provided by UToledo’s Department of Physics and Astronomy.
