The University of Toledo Department of Mathematics and Statistics will welcome a guest lecturer, Dr. Rui Loja Fernandes of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, to present the Spring 2025 Shoemaker Lecture Series beginning Wednesday, April 2.

The series encompasses three free, public lectures, the first of which is geared toward a general audience of non-mathematicians:

•  “An Invitation to Poisson Geometry” from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in Gillham Hall Room 5300;

•  “The Differential Geometry of Poisson Manifolds” from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in University Hall Room 4010; and

•  “Global Poisson Geometry and Symplectic Groupoids” from 4 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 4, in University Hall Room 4010.

The Shoemaker Lecture Series, supported by the Richard Shoemaker Fund and presented each semester by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, invites prominent mathematicians from around the world to speak on their areas of expertise.

Fernandes is the Lois M. Lackner Professor of Mathematics at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His internationally recognized research has significantly advanced the understanding of Poisson geometry, which provides the mathematical framework underlying classical mechanical systems and which plays a fundamental role in the transition to quantum mechanics.

Visitor parking on campus requires payment through the ParkMobile app, a parking meter or a daily permit via ParkUToledo. Visit the ParkUToledo website for more information.
